Infographic on gaming by Suckstobeyourgirl Infographic on gaming by Suckstobeyourgirl
I had a load of questions playing around my head about statistics of gaming and i found it quite hard to find straight forward concise answers to these questions. So i decided to create an info-graphic which was simple and to the point yet graphically beautiful, so i created this along side 3 others, basically blown up statistics. They were designed to influence peoples judgement on gamers, as the majority of non gamers have a narrow minded view, such as, saying gaming is a waste of time, and makes people lazy, etc

Hope you enjoy it, Please leave comments.

p.s Sources are at the bottom of the page, secondly i apologize for the watermark but i don't want this stolen and spread round the net without sourcing me. If you want it without then purchase a print. Thanks for looking

p.p.s

What the actual fuck, 9GAG stole my infographic?
I uploaded this to tumblr last year, you can double check the URL, i uploaded it before i submitted this for my Final major project, i was asked to moved around some of the images to make it flow better. So i decided to upload it again to tumblr and a friend recommended i upload to deviant art and try get some money out of some prints.

Original post on Designers of tumblr, submitted by me.

What point do you make in this that you call 'decent'? Seriously, this is just a waste of 2 minutes. I'm sorry for everyone who read ElderPaladin's comment, we all feel stupid now doing so

The majority of my guild on GW2 MMO are female! I too am a female gamer. We just don't like to yell out that, "omgwearecute girlgamers omg." Most of us take gaming seriously.

Yes, use a very limited sample to attempt to explain why you think this is wrong. Bravo.

Also, you need to consider the fact that maybe the thing you mentioned in the second part never happens?

Sorry it took me a bit to reply but the games being played matters because a game like mario cart is classic retro-hipster bait, nintendo as a whole is really, though if the chick plays some text only MUD or puts tons of time into rpgs or the like, it's almost obligatory that she is a real gamer. Obviously there is a grey area but the games do matter.

The visuals are simple and pretty, but the flow of reading is a bit confusing ; I think it'd look better if the facts were standing out more from each other, and read from top to bottom instead of left/right/up/down... if you see what I mean (sorry if it's confusing)
The color scheme is really nice too !

I was shocked to see that the amount of female gamers was so high too. However, the way that your school seems isn't necessarily how other schools function. At my school, there are plenty of girls that play video games. There's also plenty of more sporty guys that don't even bother with the things.
More importantly, why should the games you play define whether or not you are a "real" gamer. It may be Mario Kart, but it's still a game that requires some amount of strategy.

These are some good illustrations and statistics, but I don't think they really make an argument about gaming as a positive element. (Sorry people are stealing it, though. 9Gag is just full of plagiarism.)

Eh this all seems legit but ummm...artist? Where did you get the info regarding genders while gaming? I know there are female gamers, of course, but that they make up nigh half of the population? Pffft. It just really confounds me. I mean as a high school student, nearly every single dude in my school of 1600 people plays video games at least somewhat faithfully, about 90 or so percent or so of males, and a good portion of that plays them constantly, like at least several hours daily, dozens every week. Where as only about 5% of chicks at my school even care about video games, and the ones that do only play mario cart or something every now and then.
Question: What definition of gamer did you use?
Do you classify gamer as anyone who plays video games in general, thusly a person who play angry birds a lot on an i phone would classify or as some one who plays proper video games on consoles or PCs for extended periods of time?

And if your definition of a gamer is someone who has a passion for video games, wouldn't that allow someone who doesn't even play video games, but tries to exploit the culture for fad appeal (like a hipster for example) to be classified as a gamer? I bring this up because personally, it's common place to see chicks who use the gaming culture as a way to seem nerdy or geeky (another growing fad) where as I've rarely or never seen dudes do this.

If someone stole this, you could be proud that it was something worth stealing, and you are the rightful owner of this, that something you created in this internet culture stood out enough and that people took it to be valuable and important enough to spread, but excellent job on this, I, for one, do not think that someone taking this is cool or logical, but at least there is a positive side of this.

Someone ought to present this to the NRA, who think that video games instead of guns are the problem.
(Not that I support gun bans, but blaming video games for violence is just ridiculous).

I had no idea about the girl gamer one, I would have guessed like 15%.

It surprises me because so many games are really negative to women. (I'm mostly thinking of those games where women are running around in little more than bras and panties and the men kill a bunch of stuff.)

Console gaming costs just as much as PC gaming, I've been down both roads, made the calculations. In the term of 1 or more, the cost of a console and all games (Only calculating the higher price of console games compared to PC games) you spend around 12 000 Swedish Kronor, which is roughly and simply 1200 British pounds. Thats the cost of a highend gaming PC along with games for it. And there is no online-fee for it. Also take in count that PCs are an open platform, and they perform other tasks than simply gaming.

I am, an ex pc gamer. Currently an avid console gamer, the idea was to do with video games in general, what does it matter if the stats are mostly related to console gaming? More people console game than Pc game. Its a fact that pc gaming requires a lot more money, and a lot more knowhow to keep up the habbit, where as a console you have the element of 'ease of access' the console is basic, you buy it once, you only ever have to upgrade if it breaks, and plus, casual gaming (wii) etc.

Relationships are, at the simplest form, an emotional bond. Some people are far more tactile than others, sure, and obviously any sort of online relationship would likely not mean as much to those people.
I don't think by 'relationship' it purely means romantic relationship, either.
It's not a solid fact either way but it can't be denied that the point holds some merit, just by looking around at people interacting on the internet and at people going into romantic relationships with people they have met on the internet.
Personal experiences:
I met my best friend, who feels more like a long-lost twin to me, online almost nine years ago now. I am closer to him than I am to anyone I have befriended in person. In fact, he hates where he lives and is moving down here so we can be roommates while we finish college.
Another very close online friend I met at the same time, and I traveled across the country to visit her in 2008. She met her boyfriend on EverQuest and they've been together for ten years now and lived together for seven or so.
I have been in two serious, committed online-based romantic relationships. The first one was a number of years ago, and lasted for two years before we parted when she found someone (also on the internet) who could keep her happier than I could. I've been with my current boyfriend for just shy of two years. We're both crazy about each other and have helped each other a lot through tough emotional times. The fact that we both have almost 0 sex drive probably helps with us being pretty OK about being a good distance away, though.
But my point is, these sort of experiences? Not really uncommon, if you look. There's much less you have to judge them by right off -- typing style, their chat handle, maybe their avatar, usually. Almost always no judging from appearances right away.
Also, not all of it's just talk. I play games with all my internet pals all the time, that's generally not really much different than how we'd chill in person, anyways.
So yeah, wow, sorry for the chinawall of text there, but tl;dr just because an internet relationship isn't stronger to some people doesn't mean that applies to everyone at all!
